On 24th March, 1915, the 1st South Wales Borderers battalion of 3 Brigade, 1st Division, moved from La Couture to the trenches at Port Arthur, near Neuve Chapelle where they remained until relieved on 31st March. Records, including those of the Commonwealth War Graves Commision, show that John Bill was killed on 29th March but the battalion diary recorded that he was shot by a sniper on 28th March.
